First Indian Republic Day

The first Indian Republic Day was celebrated on 26th January 1950. And it has been 68 years since India became a Republic.

History of Indian Republic Day

India was ruled by the British until 15th of August 1947. The British had ruled India for about 200 years and in these 200 long years the Britishers defeated most of the Indian Kings and Emperors or they had signed treaties with the Kings. And to rule this vast country, the Britishers implemented rules and regulations which were called as the Government of India Act (1935).

According to the Government of India Act (1935), the Indian citizens had very few rights.

So when India became an Independent country on 15th August 1947, the Indian National Congress decided to draft their own Constitution.

Hence the work of writing the constitution of India was given to the Constituent Assembly, and the Chairman was Dr. B. R Ambedker.

The Constituent Assembly consisted of many great freedom fighters, poets, writers, thinkers, and lawyers.

Importance of Indian Republic Day

The Constitution was adopted by the Indian Constituent Assembly on 26 November 1949.

The Constitution of India came into effect on 26 January 1950 with a democratic government system, and it completed the country’s transition towards becoming the Independent Republic.

26 January was chosen as the Republic day because it was on this day in 1930 when the Declaration of Indian Independence (Purna Swaraj) was proclaimed by the Indian National Congress as opposed to the Dominion status offered by the British Regime.

How Many Years Completed for Indian Republic Day?
